This richly illustrated book describes the origins and development of
the movement which produced the Dutch contribution to Art Nouveau:
Nieuwe Kunst. It was influenced by a number of figures in the
Netherlands and abroad, including
Walter Crane, William Morris, Shannon and Ricketts on the one hand and
Viollet-le-Duc and the Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers (1827-1921) on
the other.
Ernst Braches's book first appeared in Dutch in 1973. As the only
comprehensive and detailed study, it has since remained the
unchallenged standard work on Dutch Art Nouveau and the art of the
book. General works on Art Nouveau in the English-speaking world have
traditionally devoted scant space to the art of the book, and little or
none to the Dutch contribution. Popular dictionaries of graphic design
have also overlooked the many fine artists involved, apart from Toorop.
However, during the last two decades interest in Dutch Art Nouveau has
been stimulated in the English-speaking world by the condensed
treatments which have appeared as parts of wider surveys under the
authorship of Kees Broos and Paul Hefting (Dutch Graphic Design.
Phaidon, 1993) and of Alston W. Purvis and Cees W. de Jong (Dutch
Graphic Design. A century of innovation. Thames & Hudson , 2006).
The time therefore is ripe for the first English translation of the
most authoritative and comprehensive work in existence.

Aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw vertrekt de jonge
Franse astronoom François Arago met een paar collega’s naar Spanje om te
helpen de meridiaan van Parijs op te meten. Het zijn woelige tijden:
Napoleon is bezig het Iberisch Schiereiland te veroveren en in de
Middellandse Zee vaart de Engelse oorlogsvloot rond. Het gezelschap
raakt tussen de strijdende partijen verzeild, wordt gevangen genomen,
ontsnapt en komt in Noord-Afrika terecht. Maar daar is ook niet alles
veilig. De jonge astronoom stelt alles wat hij meemaakt even nauwgezet
te boek als de metingen die hij verricht. Zijn pad wordt herhaaldelijk
door gazellen gekruist, maar die blijken uiteindelijk even ongrijpbaar
als de grootste, wetenschappelijke carrière waarvan hij droomt.

Paul Murdin (1942, Londen) is astronoom en
heeft onderzoek gedaan naar supernovae, zwarte gaten en neutronensterren
en heeft als science administrator gediend bij de Britse regering en
als treasurer bij de Royal Astronomical Society. Hij werkt aan het
Institute of Astronomy van de Universiteit van Cambridge in Engeland en
is door de Engelse koningin onderscheiden wegens zijn verdiensten voor
de astronomie. Hij is als commentator voor de BBC en CNN werkzaam
geweest. Zijn meest recente boek is Secrets of the Universe: how we discovered the Universe (Geheimen van het universum: hoe wij het universum hebben ontdekt), verschenen bij Thames and Hudson.
