Elements of aviation acoustics

Quieting cabin and flight deck noise, and reducing the impact of noise on
commununities near airports are matters of great importance to
air-manufacturers and airline operators for already more than four decades.
Undoubtedly, knowledge of both aeronautics and acoustics is essential for
a clear understanding of any aviation noise problem. Such understandmg is
a necessary prerequisite to the control of interior and exterior noise.
In view of the importance of education in dealing with noise control, this
book is devoted to the branch of aerospace engineering known as aviation
acoustics. The book contains twelve chapters and three appendixes which
originate from an annual course on airplane noise given by the author to
aerospace engineering students at Delft University of Technology (DUI).
The book is intended to be useful to undergraduate students of aerospace
engineering, and also to researchers and practicing engineers who wish to
revive their understanding of the topic.

Many of the data needed for calculations in chemical engineering are dispersed over the literature. Moreover, various systems of units are used, often forcing the user to perform tedious conversions before a `quick` calculation can be started. In this companion the authors have compiled those data that, according to their experience, are used frequently in transport phenomena and related subjects and, since all data are in S.I. units, rapid access to various calculations is facilitated.

This book is of course no substitute for a complete literature survey and no compendium on all data available in literature. On many occasions a selection had to be made from a multitude of expressions. For instance, for the mass transfer to bubbles, drops and particles, dozens of correlations are available. In those cases the most general correlation or the expression most commonly used has been chosen.

This companion consists of four parts. The first part is general and gives information varying from the Greek alphabet to calibration curves for thermocouples and pH ranges of indicators.

The second part consists of frequently used mathematics. In addition to general mathematical techniques, a selection of vectorial and tensorial calculus relevant to hydrodynamics and elementary rheology has been added.

The third part is a compendium of the transport phenomena. A systematic arrangement facilitates its use. The figures are in such a form that easy reading and accuracy are combined.

In the final part various material properties are given. Special attention has been paid to the most commonly used materials: air and water, but also frequently used materials like for instance hydrocarbons, foods and others are included.

For easy access to the data an extensive index is very important, so, special attention has been given to make the index as complete as possible.

[Dutch] In dit boek is ernaar gestreefd een zodanige selectie van formules en tabellen op het terrein van de fysische technologie te presenteren,dat men hieruit voor het dagelijks gebruik kan putten. Het boek bestaat uit vier delen. In het eerste, algemene deel zijn gegevens ondergebracht vari rend van het Griekse alfabet tot thermokoppels. Het tweede deel bevat veel gebruikte wiskunde. Algemene balansvergelijkingen, differenti ren in vector- en tensornotatie, Besselfuncties, Laplace transformaties, elementaire differentiaalvergelijkingen en nog vele andere behoren hiertoe. Het derde deel is een compendium over fysische transportverschijnselen en bevat veel gegevens die in de vorm van grafieken zijn opgenomen. In het vierde deel wordt een keuze geboden uit de stofeigenschappen, uiteenlopend van die van water en lucht tot die van een aantal voedingsstoffen. Een uitvoerige index sluit het (Engelstalige) boek af.

The mind-boggling rate of industrial expansion of recent decades has produced innumerable technical devices and systems on which we rely in our daily life for modern convenience, safety, and sometimes even preservation of human lives. These modern artifacts cover a broad spectrum ranging from a relatively simple electronic watch to very complex transportation systems such as airplanes or spacecraft. Often, one is not even aware of the use of particular systems (part of our electrical energy is generated by nuclear reactors) until one is most unpleasantly reminded (Chernobyl disaster).

It is a proven fact that all these technical systems are producible, in other words: one can at least make them work at the time of first use. A higher order requirement, however, is that they remain serviceable throughout their expected useful life; i.e. that they are reliable. The consequences of an unreliable functioning of these systems may vary from inconvenience, extra costs, environmental damage, to even death. Such inability to perform reliably may not only arise from the product itself (usually manifested in hardware or software failures), but also from human errors. Take for instance the (pilot) error where an aircraft is put down on the runway extremely hard. As the cover picture shows, this can result in a cracked fusilage and the dragging of the entire tail section over the runway until the aircraft comes to a complete stop.

The aim of this textbook is to familiarise the reader with the principles and terminology of reliability engineering:

Op een bouwwerk werken uitwendige krachten zoals zwaartekracht, wind, gronddruk, waterdruk. Maar ook opgelegde vervormingen door temperatuur, zettingen, krimp en kruip. De draagconstructie van het bouwwerk moet dit alles opvangen en ervoor zorgen dat het bouwwerk gedurende z`n levensduur voldoende veilig, stijf en stabiel is.

Het aantonen dat een constructie stabiel is, is met de invoering van de computer eenvoudiger geworden, want met een handberekening een exacte analyse maken van een constructie die gevoelig is voor instabiliteit is vaak een zeer tijdrovende, zo niet onmogelijke zaak. In het ontwerpproces, waar vaak snel beslissingen moeten worden genomen over de vormgeving van een constructie, is het belangrijk om ten eerste inzicht te hebben in de vraag of we te maken hebben met een re el stabiliteitsprobleem, ten tweede om de mate van stabiliteit te kunnen vaststellen en ten derde tot een voldoende kwantitatieve benadering van vervormingen en inwendige krachten te komen om globale afmetingen van de constructie te kunnen vaststellen. Blijkt de mate van stabiliteit gering dan kan men de constructievorm wijzigen of de constructie stijver maken. Dit proces mag niet teveel tijd vergen maar moet wel betrouwbaar zijn. In dit boek wordt voor lijnvormige constructies een methodiek ontwikkeld die inzicht geeft in de problematiek en snel tot betrouwbare kwantitatieve informatie leidt.

Als vormgeving en dimensionering zijn vastgelegd kan eventueel met de computer een meer exacte analyse worden uitgevoerd. Dat wordt niet in dit boek behandeld.

De duurzame gebruiksgoederen vormen een be lang rijk deel van de menselijke technocultuur. Ze worden continu en in grote aantallen geproduceerd en verbeterd.

Het bestaansrecht, uitgangspunt en doel van gebruiksvoorwerpen dienen vooral afgemeten te worden aan de mate waarin het gebruikers helpt bij hun functioneren. Duurzame gebruiksgoederen zijn technische, kunstmatige hulpstukken, die mensen onder steunen bij het zich verzorgen, rusten, leren, zich ontspannen werken en vervoeren. Voor de beroepsbeoefenaar die bestaande producten beoordeelt of verbetert of die nieuwe `materi le functie vervullers` bedenkt en materialiseert, is daarom menskundige kennis onontbeerlijk. Het gaat daarbij vooral om die humane aspecten, die van belang zijn voor het omgaan met de producten. Een grondige vertrouwdheid is geboden met die aspecten van het menselijk functioneren, met de behoeften, capaciteiten, beperkingen en gewoonten en met de grote verschillen daarbij tussen individuen. Die vertrouwdheid is de basis voor inspiratie bij productinnovatie en productaanpassing.

Dit studieboek is een inleiding tot de productergonomie en heeft tot doel ontwerpers vertrouwd te maken met de biologische en functie-psychologische ken merken van product-gebruikers. De nadruk ligt daarbij op de samenhang tussen en het overzicht over `s mensens zwakke en sterke kanten bij het omgaan met producten. Er is gestreefd naar een zo groot mogelijke ontwerprelevantie van de informatie. Vanwege de verscheidenheid van producten, gebruikers en van gebruikssituaties, is die menskundige basis breed, zonder evenwel uit het oog te verliezen dat dit boek als hulp moet dienen bij het ontwerpen.

Het boek is opgebouwd uit vijf delen. Het eerste en laatste deel zijn vooral gericht op algemene humane achtergronden en doelstellingen van het productontwerpen. De drie tussenliggende delen behandelen respectievelijk de fysieke, de zintuigelijke en de mentale menselijke eigenschappen, die relevant zijn bij de interactie met producten.
